5 Free Family-Friendly Austin Summer Events

Here in Austin, the phrase “Summertime and the livin is easy” is basically an anthem. It’s the season of high heat, yes, but it’s also prime time for the unique events our community has to offer that are fun for the whole family.  The best part is – you don’t have to spend money to have a good time in the sun in this city. These events are all free, and all fun! So, pack the family into the car and head out to these fun events.

Fanta-Sea Creatures Arts & Crafts

When: Saturday, July 14, 11:00 AM – 3 PM
Where: The Contemporary Austin at Laguna Gloria @ 3809 West 35th Street

The Contemporary Austin at Laguna Gloria hosts free family programs on the second Saturday of every month. Come to check out the museum’s beautiful garden on the lake while your kids partake in hands-on art activities. The theme for July 14th is “Fanta-Sea Creatures.” Taking inspiration from what could be in the depths of the Laguna, kids will be able to imagine and recreate mythical sea creatures on canvas.

Austin Symphony Children’s Day Art Park

When: Wednesday, July 18, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Where: Austin Public Library New Central @ 710 W. César Chávez St.

Keep the culture comin’ with the Austin Symphony Children’s Day Art Park. Introduce your kids to the magic of performing arts and enjoy the music yourself at this morning event. The Austin Symphony has held this event for 30 years, but this is the first time it will be held at this location, the brand new Central Library downtown.

Between 10 and 10:30 AM, kids can visit the Instrument zoo and see, touch and play with the instruments, and take advantage of the presence of symphony musicians to ask them questions! The featured performance will take place at 10:30 AM, and post-concert activities will follow, including an interactive percussion station led by AllRhythms, instrument making, arts and crafts stations, coloring, and storytelling. On July 18th, the ASO Woodwind Quintet will perform, with entertainment by Hansel and Gretel and Bernadette Nason as the narrator.

Lady Bird Day

When: Saturday, July 28, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Where: Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center @ 4801 La Crosse Ave.

Ever notice all the blue bonnets planted on the side of our city’s highways and medians? We have former First Lady Lady Bird Johnson to thank for them. Mrs. Johnson influenced the Johnson administration to enact more than 200 environmental laws, including the Wilderness Act of 1964 and the 1965 Highway Beautification Act. This annual event honors her tireless work to preserve wild landscapes and the environment.

The Wildflower Center will host a lot of family-friendly activities, including screenings of a selection of Mrs. Johnson’s home movies as well as other Lady Bird films throughout the day in the Auditorium, a garden tour led by an educator at 11 AM, and outdoor games in the Family Garden.

Family Sunday Funday

When: Every Sunday through August 26, 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Where: backYARD at Waller Creek @ 701 E. 11th

Every Sunday this summer, the backYARD lawn space at the Sheraton Austin hotel, at the heart of downtown, transforms into a phenomenal playground for kids. There’s a bounce house, Jenga, yard tic tac toe, cornhole, balloon-making, face painting, and magic tricks! Not to mention live music from local performers.

Kids 12 and under are free, and it’s just $5 for adults to get in. Self-parking is complimentary through Sheraton Austin at the Capitol’s parking garage. If you do feel like spending some dough, a special brunch menu is available.
