How to Master the Art of Spring Cleaning

How to Master the Art of Spring Cleaning

We already know that living in a clean home has physical benefits – you breathe better, get sick less often, and even lower your risk of injury around the house! But did you know that spring cleaning has psychological benefits as well?

According to Psychology Today, spring cleaning has been associated with “improved mood, decreased stress, and heightened creativity.” For many of us, winter can be a difficult season during which to stay on top of household duties. Whether it’s because we’re focused on our New Year’s resolutions, or have less energy because of the weather and lack of sunlight, it’s easy to let things go around the house after the holidays.

Thankfully, springtime gives us the opportunity to regain our focus and feel rejuvenated. A thorough cleaning of your entire home – every nook and cranny, especially the spots we don’t clean on a regular basis – is key for reducing stress and reviving our mood and energy.

Follow these easy steps to get your home, and yourself, ready for warm weather.

5 Tips for Spring Cleaning the Your Home’s Interior

#1 – Out with the old
The first step for a successful spring cleaning is to donate, sell, or throw out things you don’t need. Decluttering our environment can actually help declutter our minds. Clutter has even been linked to high cortisol levels! So, take a page out of Marie Kondo’s book as you walk through your house and ask yourself: do I really need this? If you haven’t used it in the past year, get rid of it.

#2Experiment with Feng-Shui
In order to get a truly deep clean, you’ll need to move your furniture so that you can clean underneath. Sweep, mop, and polish wood floors. Once you’re done, embrace the spirit of new beginnings and consider re-arranging the furniture.

#3 – Tackle the C’s
These three c’s are usually skipped during regular house cleanings:  curtains, carpet and ceiling fans. Before you put back your furniture, make sure you tend to any rugs or carpet. If you have wall-to-wall carpeting, now’s the time to rent a steam-cleaner to lift stains and remove allergens. And, when was the last time you washed your curtains? Take them down and run your curtains along with a damp towel through an air-fluff cycle for 15 minutes to get rid of the dust. A great trick for cleaning ceiling fans if you don’t have an extendable duster is to use a pillowcase. You can fit it around the fan blade and use as a rag, and the pillowcase will catch any falling dust. You’ll be able to rest easy knowing you tackle these items for a while!

#4 – Give the kitchen and bathroom extra TLC.
These two rooms are probably the ones you clean the most often. However, spring cleaning is the time to do things you normally skip. First, take everything out of the fridge in order to scrub and sanitize it. Then, think about how to organize the fridge in the most efficient way possible (for example, it helps to keep the most perishable items in front). Clean your oven and/or range, and dust above kitchen cabinets. Finally, reorganize your pantry and your pots and pans. Spending time on this now will save you time every time you cook. In the bathroom, scrub the tub and spray down any tile with a vinegar solution, (this works great for soaking shower heads too to remove mildew). Make sure to clean behind and under the toilet, and to sanitize handles and faucets. Knowing the two germiest rooms in your house are super sanitary will give you peace of mind.

#5 – Apply the final touches.
The last step is to wipe off every surface and dust everything in sight. Don’t forget the often-neglected blinds! Use a vacuum attachment to tackle upholstery and clean under couch cushions to collect crumbs, dirt, and fur if you have pets. Dust end tables, bookshelves, baseboards, doorways, and you’re done with the inside!

Undertaking a spring may seem overwhelming, but the hardest part is coming up with a game plan. With this list in hand, and with the goal of doing something that will improve your mental and physical health, spring cleaning will be a spring breeze. Don’t forget to play music as you clean!
